- Baking soda — odor, gentle scrub
- Castile soap — general wash (unscented for cats)
- 3% hydrogen peroxide — hard-surface disinfect, skunk recipe
- Lemon — degreaser (dogs only, never cats)
The 7 to avoid
- Bleach
- Pine / phenol cleaners
- Essential oils (tea tree, eucalyptus, citrus, peppermint)
- Ammonia
- Quats (disinfectant wipes/sprays)
- Ethylene glycol (antifreeze-scented products)
- Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
The weekly routine
- Daily: rinse bowls, scoop litter
- Weekly: vinegar mop, castile-soap surfaces, hot-wash pet bedding
- Monthly: deep-clean litter area, sanitize toys
The emergency order
Blot → enzyme → vinegar rinse → baking soda dry. Never rub, never ammonia.
