Vomit is one of the easier pet messes if you catch it early and skip the ammonia-based sprays. Four steps, all pet-safe.
Step 1 — Lift solids
Use a paper towel or spatula to remove as much solid material as possible. Drop it in a lined trash bag right away.
Step 2 — Cold-water blot
Blot the spot with a cloth dampened in cold water. Cold, not hot — heat cooks the proteins and sets the stain. Blot from the outside in so you do not spread it.
Step 3 — Baking soda paste or enzyme
For a fresh spot, a paste of baking soda and a little water left 15 minutes lifts both stain and smell. For anything set or smelly, use an enzyme cleaner instead.
Step 4 — Vinegar rinse and dry
Dab with a 1:1 white vinegar and water mix to neutralize odor, then sprinkle baking soda, leave overnight, and vacuum.
Do not reach for ammonia-based carpet cleaners. Vomit already smells of ammonia; adding more tells your pet this is a bathroom spot. Ammonia is on the avoid list for this reason.
