The Only 5 Ingredients You Need for a Pet-Safe Home

You do not need a cabinet full of specialty cleaners to keep a pet home safe. Five inexpensive, widely available ingredients handle nearly every mess — and none of them leaves a poison residue behind.

1. White vinegar

The workhorse. A 1:1 mix with water cuts grease, deodorizes, and dissolves light mineral buildup. Use it on floors, counters, and glass. Never use on natural stone or uncoated wood.

2. Baking soda

A gentle abrasive and odor absorber. Sprinkle on carpets before vacuuming, make a paste with water for scrubbing sinks, or leave an open box in the litter area. It is safe if a pet licks a trace.

3. Castile soap

A plant-based liquid soap (peppermint is fine for dogs, unscented for cats). A few drops in a bucket of water cleans floors, surfaces, and even pet beds without residues that irritate skin.

4. 3% hydrogen peroxide

A mild disinfectant for hard, non-porous surfaces and a key part of the skunk-odor recipe. Do not use on fabrics you care about — it can bleach color — and never mix it with vinegar in the same bottle.

5. Lemon

A natural degreaser and fresh scent. Use the juice diluted, or a used half rubbed on cutting boards. Skip lemon (and all citrus) products around cats, whose livers cannot process the compounds.

Buy the plain versions. "Antibacterial" dish soaps and scented castile soaps often add ingredients you are trying to avoid. Plain, unscented, and cheap is the sweet spot.

How they fit together
